As a small business owner, it’s hard to stay on top of everything you have going on – managing your day-to-day tasks, creating new offers, onboarding new clients, and everything in between. And part of that ‘everything in between’ requires setting goals for your business.
But staying on top of your goals can be really tricky. That’s because you need something more tangible than just writing your goal down on a to-do list or manifesting it out of thin air (even though we wish it was that easy!). You need to break each goal down into achievable steps – ones that you can actually track, so you know how much progress you’re making toward that end goal.
Okay…so how do I do that?
We’re glad you asked! Instead of manually tracking your goals or frantically searching for a new app, you can do everything right inside ClickUp*. Watch the video below to see how to use ClickUp to track your goals and OKRs, or keep reading to see some examples!
OKRs are objectives and key results. Here’s a quick breakdown to understand it a bit better:
You can also think of OKRs as a framework for your entire business that outlines your strategy, goals, and steps needed to get there over a certain amount of time.
Beyond day-to-day project management, ClickUp also does a phenomenal job of helping you create goals and OKRs – and actually track your progress toward them.
In your left navigation inside ClickUp, you’ll see ‘Goals.’ This is where you can house all of your Objectives – and inside those, your key results. Here’s an example of what that could look like for you.
Let’s say our main objective (or goal) for the year is to increase engagement with new paying customers. That’s a great starting place, but we need a bit more to make this achievable. That’s where our key results come in.
Within this objective, we set up several different targets – each with quantifiable numbers. From there, we outlined the exact percentage points we want to increase by.
As our open rates increase, we can click into each target and adjust our numbers – either by changing the total number or increasing the current amount. From there, ClickUp will show you the progress towards each of these targets, which is super helpful and motivational to see.
Then, once you complete each target, ClickUp will pop some confetti to help you celebrate!
Setting up your own goals and OKRs inside ClickUp is a pretty seamless process. It may take a few times to figure out how you want to break down each goal, but with a little bit of testing, you’ll get there in no time. Here’s a quick breakdown of how to do it:
For this example, we’ll say that our goal is to Create a New Membership. As you set up a new goal, you’ll be able to determine details like:
This is where you’ll break down your goal into achievable targets or benchmarks. Depending on your goal, you can create targets for each quarter, or map out all the steps or tasks you need to complete to reach that goal. For our example, that might look like:
Make sure that your targets are detailed enough that they can be measured against your ultimate end goal!
Next, you want to select the type of target. ClickUp lets you choose from:
Going back to our example, we would use the ‘True/False’ or ‘Tasks’ option. True/False is easier to use if you don’t already have your tasks set up in ClickUp. If you do, though, you can pull in any of your current tasks. As you finish those tasks elsewhere in ClickUp, your goal tracker will update automatically!
If you’re ready to hit the ground running on some brand-new goals for the upcoming year, we have a template for that! (But you probably saw that one coming, huh?)
With our Goals/OKR Tracker template, you’ll already have tons of objectives and targets built out for you that you can customize to your business. We’ve also built out different types of targets – numbers, currency, true/false, and tasks – so you can see how each one is built out and how detailed (or not) you want your targets to be.
You can snag this ClickUp template inside our ClickUp Template Vault, which has 40+ ClickUp templates for your business – with lifetime access!
